The San Jose Zouaves (pronounced ZWA-AVs) are a high power rifle club with the aim of encouraging organized rifle competition among civilian shooters, with an emphasis on safety, fundamental marksmanship, firearms knowledge, and good sportsmanship. Our club is affiliated with both the Office of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), and the National Rifle Association (NRA). We are located in San Jose, with Santa Clara Field Sports Park as our home range. Our club has adult matches twice a month, on the first and third Saturdays. Competitors shoot highpower rifles, equipped with iron sights, capable of accepting at least 5 rounds. First Time shooters are welcome to attend on the first Saturday only. First Timers will be provided with everything they need to train for and shoot their first match, which will also qualify them for CMP rifle purchases. First time shooters will not be allowed to shoot on regular match days (third Saturday). An exception will be made for shooters with a NRA Highpower Classification. The club also runs a Junior program on the Second Saturday of the month. Juniors age 10-18 years of age are welcome to participate in our training program, which emphasizes safe handling of small bore rifles, fosters good sportsmanship, and improves overall shooting abilities. Scout Troops, ROTC Programs, and other organized groups are welcome, but should contact us ahead of time if their group is larger than 10 people.
In addition to our regular schedule, the Zouaves host several special events throughout the year. These events include vintage rifle matches, scoped rifle matches, time and accuracy matches, and other matches of interest to our members. There is a long history behind the Zouave name [Wikipedia Article]. Through our mission of creating citizen sharpshooters both young and old, we hope to preserve a long tradition that has served our country well, both at home and abroad.
